When an Omen Does Not Count — What the Texts and Tradition Say

Per Brihat Samhita, omens from a village animal in the forest, a day creature at night, or a sick, scared, fighting or mating animal don't count.

Omens & Signs

Some creatures' omens are void in certain seasons — e.g. crow and cuckoo in spring.

The Samhita also says a sound from beyond a krosha carries no meaning.

Brihat Samhita's general rule reverses omens for women; no separate rule is given for this one.
