Mahadasha of the 9 Planets: What Each Period Brings

A mahadasha is a long planetary period in the Vimshottari system. The full cycle is 120 years and runs in a fixed order: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury. Which one comes first depends on the nakshatra the Moon was in at birth — the full method is on the Vimshottari dasha page.

How the result of a mahadasha is decided

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra says a planet gives its dasha results according to its own strength and the houses it rules and occupies. A strong planet, or the benefic / yoga-karaka planet of your lagna, usually gives a supportive period. A weak or afflicted planet asks for more patience and effort — it does not mean a bad life. Inside each mahadasha, nine antardashas fine-tune the timing, and slow transits (gochar) add to it.

The themes above are general. The same mahadasha can feel very different in two charts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which mahadasha is the best?

No mahadasha is good or bad for everyone. The period of a planet that is strong, or benefic for your lagna, is usually the most supportive.

How do I find my current mahadasha?

Make your free kundli with the exact birth time. It shows your current mahadasha, antardasha and pratyantardasha with dates.

Are Saturn and Rahu mahadashas always difficult?

No. For some lagnas Saturn is the yoga-karaka, and a well-placed Rahu can bring big growth. They mainly ask for discipline and careful decisions.
