What Is a Dasha and How to Read It

A dasha is a ruling period of a planet in your life. The kundli is a still map of the moment of birth, and the dasha adds time to it: it shows which planet holds the microphone in each stretch of life. The most widely used system is Vimshottari, a 120-year cycle: Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17, Ketu 7 and Venus 20 years. The Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Khemraj edition, chapters 35 and 36) gives the same order and the same years.
Your first dasha is ruled by the lord of the nakshatra the Moon occupied at birth, and you receive only the unspent part of it. Each mahadasha divides into antardashas (length = mahadasha years × antardasha years ÷ 120) and then pratyantar dashas. To read a dasha, find the running planet, see its house, the houses it rules, its condition and its companions, and then check its link with the sub-period planet. There are no simply "good" or "bad" planets: the same planet gives different results in different charts.
Two cautions. A dasha gives a likely window of months, never an exact date, and it depends on an accurate birth time: one hour of error can shift a long dasha such as Venus by about ten months. Read it together with transits (gochar) for timing. Planets show direction; your actions decide the destination.
