Rashi, Lagna, Sun Sign and Nakshatra Explained

Many people ask, 'Which sign am I really?' The newspaper says one thing, the family pandit says another, and a phone app says a third. The truth is that these are different things, and each is correct in its own way. Let's look at all four in simple terms.
Moon Sign: Your 'Rashi' in India
In India, when someone asks for your rashi, they usually mean your Moon sign: the sign the Moon was in when you were born. The Moon changes sign about every two and a quarter days, so people born in the same month can have different Moon signs. Vedic astrology links the Moon with the mind, which is why daily horoscopes and transits (gochar, the current movement of planets) are usually read from the Moon sign.
Lagna: The Sign of the Exact Moment
The lagna, or ascendant, is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact time of your birth. Because the Earth keeps turning, the lagna changes roughly every two hours. That's why two babies born on the same day in the same city can have different ascendants. All twelve houses of the chart are counted from the lagna, so astrologers treat it as very important.
Sun Sign and Western Apps
In Western astrology, your 'star sign' is usually your Sun sign: the sign the Sun was in at birth. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which is tied to the seasons and starts Aries around 21 March. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is tied to the actual background stars. The Earth's axis wobbles very slowly, so today the two systems differ by about 24 degrees. This gap is called the ayanamsa.
So if a Western app calls you a Leo, your Vedic Sun sign will often be Cancer. Neither app is broken; they simply use different measuring scales. Confusion only starts when people assume the two are the same thing.
What Is Lahiri Ayanamsa?
Astrologers don't fully agree on the exact size of the ayanamsa. The value most widely used in India is the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, which was also adopted by the Indian government's Calendar Reform Committee. VedicDost uses Lahiri ayanamsa and the Parashari method (the classical system linked to Sage Parashara), so your chart matches most Indian panchangs.
Nakshatra: Finer Than a Sign
The 360 degrees of the sky are divided into 12 signs, and also into 27 nakshatras. Each nakshatra spans about 13 degrees 20 minutes and has four padas (quarters). The nakshatra holding your Moon at birth is your birth star. It's used to choose the first letter of a name, to set the start of your Vimshottari dasha, and in kundli matching.
So Which Sign Should You Follow?
In Vedic astrology, know both your Moon sign and your lagna. Read horoscopes by Moon sign, and start chart reading from the lagna. And remember: astrology is a tradition, not proven science. Your sign offers one way of thinking about yourself, but big decisions shouldn't rest on it alone.
